Thermal Phase Change Materials

Würth Elektronik WE-PCM
Thermal Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are thermal interface materials designed to sit between a heat-generating component and a heat sink or cooling surface.
Supplied in solid form at room temperature, they soften and flow once the device reaches a defined phase change temperature, filling micro-air gaps between mating surfaces and creating a low-resistance thermal path.
Once installed, they remain in place across the device’s operating temperature range without pumping out or migrating.
The Würth Elektronik WE-PCM family is supplied with release liners on both faces and is available in two variants — a higher thermal conductivity construction with an internal polyimide reinforcement layer for additional dielectric performance, and a single-layer construction for general-purpose thermal interfacing.
Both variants share a 55 °C phase change temperature, an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +130 °C, and are RoHS, REACh and halogen-free compliant.
Typical applications
Phase Change Materials are widely used wherever a clean, dry, drop-in thermal interface is needed between a semiconductor or power component and its heat sink. Common applications include:
-
CPU, GPU and processor cooling assemblies
-
Power electronics and IGBT modules
-
DC-DC converters and switch-mode power supplies
-
LED lighting and driver modules
-
Telecommunications and networking hardware
-
Battery management systems and energy storage
-
Industrial control and motor drive electronics
-
EV charging electronics and on-board chargers

How we convert the WE-PCM range
We convert WE-PCM Thermal Phase Change Materials, supplied in sheet form, into finished parts ready for assembly.
Our in-house machinery allows us to produce parts to suit a wide variety of component footprints and heat sink geometries.
Die-Cutting
Our die-cutting presses produce high volumes of consistent, repeatable parts from sheet PCM.
Ideal for standard rectangular, square or profiled pads used on processors, power modules and heat sinks. Parts can be supplied loose, interleaved, or laid out on backing sheets for ease of pick-and-place.
CNC Knife Table Cutting
Our CNC knife tables cut PCM sheet directly from a digital file with no tooling required.
This makes them well suited to prototypes, low-to-medium volume production, custom shapes, and short-notice design iterations.
Most thermal pad outlines, including those with internal cut-outs for screws, standoffs or component clearances, can be produced this way.
Material Variants We Convert
WE-PCM with Polyimide Reinforcement (Black) — higher thermal conductivity construction with an internal polyimide carrier providing additional dielectric performance.
Suited to applications where electrical isolation between component and heat sink is a consideration alongside thermal transfer.
WE-PCM Single-Layer (Grey) — a single-layer phase change construction for general-purpose thermal interfacing between components and heat sinks.
A practical choice where a clean, dry alternative to thermal grease is required.
