Bumpon Range

3M™ Bumpon™ Resilient Rollstock is a tough, opaque polyurethane material supplied with a factory-applied pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. We convert four grades, offering a choice between solid polyurethane and medium-density foam, with thicknesses from 0.8 mm to 3.2 mm. All grades have a matte surface finish.

Available Grades

SJ6032,  Solid polyurethane, 0.8 mm (1/32"), Acrylic (A-20) Adhesive

SJ6216, Solid polyurethane, 1.6 mm (1/16"), Synthetic rubber (R-25) Adhesive

SJ5916, Medium foam polyurethane, 1.6 mm (1/16"), Acrylic (A-20) Adhesive

SJ5908, Medium foam polyurethane, 3.2 mm (1/8"), Acrylic (A-20) Adhesive

Key Properties

The polyurethane composition gives the material a strong combination of protective and functional characteristics:

  • High skid resistance – the matte surface achieves a kinetic coefficient of friction greater than 1.0 on stainless steel and glass, providing reliable grip on a wide range of surfaces.

  • Vibration and shock dampening – absorbs impact and reduces transmitted vibration, helping to protect both the product and the surface it rests on.

  • Excellent cushioning – the foam grades (SJ5916, SJ5908) offer additional compliance and cushioning under load.

  • Abrasion resistance – resists wear even in applications involving repeated contact or movement.

  • Long-term resilience – the polyurethane will not crack, harden, or take a permanent set with age.

  • Resistance to marring and staining – the surface will not mark or discolour most materials it contacts.

  • Chemical resistance – unaffected by common detergents, bleach, ammonia, diesel fuel, and motor oil.

  • Wide service temperature range – suitable for use from -34°C to +66°C, with intermittent exposure up to 107°C.

  • Pressure-sensitive adhesive backing – all grades are supplied with an aggressive adhesive and a polyester release liner, allowing straightforward application by hand or automated means.

The two adhesive systems available across our grades suit different substrate types:

  • Acrylic adhesive (A-20) on grades SJ6032, SJ5916, and SJ5908 – provides excellent shear strength and bonds well to metals, ABS, polycarbonate, and acrylic substrates.

  • Synthetic rubber adhesive (R-25) on grade SJ6216 – very high initial tack with excellent adhesion to both high and low surface energy materials, including polypropylene, polyethylene, and powder-coated finishes.

Typical applications

Once converted, Bumpon Resilient Rollstock parts are used wherever a self-adhesive protective, cushioning, or grip element is needed. Common end-use products include:

  • Protective feet and bumpers – die-cut pads applied to the base or underside of consumer electronics, desktop computers, calculators, electric housewares, and medical devices to provide grip, cushioning, and surface protection.

  • Anti-vibration and anti-rattle spacers – cut to shape and fitted within enclosures, panels, or assemblies to fill gaps, dampen noise, and reduce transmitted vibration.

  • Cushioning stops for cabinetry – the foam grades are particularly suited as door and drawer buffers, absorbing the impact of closing and preventing surface damage.

  • Gaskets and seals – cut to profile for light-duty gasketing applications where cushioning and surface compliance are required.

  • Corner and edge protectors – strip-form parts applied to vulnerable edges and corners to guard against impact damage.

  • Door kick pads and scuff guards – applied to door panels and frames in areas subject to repeated foot or trolley contact.

  • Surface protection spacers and stops – fitted between components or surfaces to maintain clearance and prevent contact damage.

  • Skid-resistant pads – applied beneath equipment or products to prevent movement on smooth surfaces.

How we convert Adhesive Tapes

We receive 3M™ Bumpon™ Resilient Rollstock in roll form and convert it to finished components using a range of precision converting processes. The combination of processes used depends on the geometry, volume, and specification of the part required.

Die-Cutting

Die-cutting, which cuts parts cleanly through the polyurethane and adhesive layer to the required shape. Our flatbed die-cutting machines are particularly well suited to the thicker grades, producing consistent, burr-free parts across a wide range of profiles – including circles, squares, rectangles, D-shapes, and many custom forms.

Kiss-Cutting

The majority of Bumpon components are produced by Kiss-Cutting. Where parts need to be supplied on a backing liner for ease of handling or automated application, we kiss-cut through the polyurethane and adhesive while leaving the release liner intact. This produces peelable parts presented on a continuous liner, either in sheet or roll format, ready for pick-and-place or manual application in your assembly process.

CNC Knife Cutting

For prototype quantities, complex profiles, or short production runs, we use our CNC knife table to cut parts directly from slit stock without tooling. This process offers flexibility for development work or low-volume requirements.

Tape Lamination

Where a part needs to be bonded to a second substrate on both faces, we can laminate an additional adhesive layer to the top surface of the material using our tape laminating machines. This enables the converted part to adhere both to the application surface via the factory-applied backing and to a secondary component on the upper face.
